Historical Chronicle

The concept of the Martin Luther King Committee (Elbert County Planning Committee, Inc.)was conceived by Mary Morrison Clark in October 1993.  The next year, January 16, 1994, marked Elbert County’s first MLK Parade and Ecumenical Service; planners registered 103 entries.

Our first Ecumenical Banquet was held January 18, 2003. We began implementing a banquet on Saturday, instead of hosting the Sunday evening program immediately following the parade.  This action made it possible to enhance activities for more community involvement.

About the Founder

Mary Morrison Clark is a wife, mother, philanthropist, Bowman City Councilwoman, a member of  “The” Savannah State University One Hundred Thousand Dollar Club,  Bon Bons Social and Civic Club, a life member of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc., NAACP, and a Diamond Life Member of Savannah State University. She was a historian for Bowman Elementary School where she retired as an educator after twenty-three years. Mary worships with fellow member of Oconee Baptist Church in Stephens, GA, serves with the Deaconess Ministry, and is chairperson of the Women’s Conference Ministry.

But, most importantly, she serves God by serving others. Two of her favorite verses of Scripture are. . . “Don’t  worry about anything, but in everything by prayer, petition and with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and minds in Christ Jesus.”  (Philippians 4: 6-7)
